Fabrication & Prototyping Area

O.T. Swanson Multidisciplinary Design Laboratory

Overview

A Haas Technical Education Center (HTEC) resides within the Fabrication & Prototyping Area.

The Fabrication & Prototyping Area services a variety of undergraduate academic project work.

These courses include:

  • Introduction to Engineering Design

    A first course in engineering design which emphasizes creativity, teamwork, communication, and work across engineering disciplines. Students do a semester-long project which provides a design-build-test experience.

  • Advanced Manufacturing Laboratory (AML) Courses

    AML I -- Theory and laboratory experimentation in manufacturing technologies. Topics include robotics and assembly, injection molding, vacuum forming, rapid prototyping, computer numerically controlled (CNC) machine tools, metal forming processes, and industrial safety.

    AML II -- Students are organized into “companies” to design and build a manufacturing system to produce a production batch of 600 copies of a product based on the technologies of AML I.

  • Multidisciplinary Capstone Courses

The Fabrication & Prototyping Area of the O.T. Swanson Multidisciplinary Design Laboratory offers students from a wide-variety of engineering disciplines, the latest manufacturing technologies.

The facility includes;

On-staff manufacturing technician who supports students in the production/assembly of prototypes, tooling, critical design elements, and testing apparatus associated with their project work.
