Professional Background
Professor Moynihan received a Ph.D. in chemistry form Princeton University in 1965. He was a faculty member in chemistry at California State University at Los Angeles and in chemistry and in materials science at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., before joining the Rensselaer faculty in 1981. He is author, co-author, or co-editor of over 180 scientific publications.

Research Bio
Professor Moynihan's current research interests are thermodynamic, transport, electrical and optical properties of glasses and liquids. One of his recent projects has been an investigation of whether many of the characteristics of the glass transition are due to the fact that small regions of varying density in the liquid can rearrange independently and on different time scales (a property frequently referred to as "dynamic heterogeneity"). Other recent projects have been the development of thermodynamic models for amorphous/amorphous phase transitions in liquids and for the excess thermodynamic properties of glass forming liquids relative to those of the cryst
