Professor Chung received his BChE from Seoul National University (1962) in Korea, MChE from Stevens Institute of Technology (1966), and PhD from Rutgers University (1969). He worked for industrial companies for about 12 years between 1961 and 1973, including Lucky Chemical (Now, LG in Korea), Celanese Plastics, Waldron-Hartig, and Exxon Research & Engineering. He joined Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) as an assistant professor in January 1973, and received fast promotions to a full professor in July 1979 at the early age of 39.

Dr. Chung has been fortunate to utilize his research findings in practice. His three extruder screw patents have become commercially successful high performance screws. These high performance screws have increased the production rates by 30% and more at numerous companies. Compiling his research achievements and practical knowledge, he published a book in 2000 titled, "EXTRUSION OF POLYMERS - Theory and Practice".

He retired from RPI on Jan. 1, 2000, and he no longer has teaching duty, but continues his research and student-related activities at RPI. He also maintains his principal consulting activities.

  • Fellow, Society of Plastics Engineers

Dr. Chung is a member of the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE), the Society of Rheology, Polymer Processing Society, and others. He is recognized mainly for his contribution to polymer extrusion, both in theories and practice. His professional activities have been primarily at the SPE-Extrusion Division. He was elected a Fellow of the SPE in 1985 (only about 30 fellows among about 25,000 members at the time). He received the highest award by the SPE Extrusion Division, "Distinguished Achievement Award" in 1987 for outstanding contribution to the knowledge of plastic extrusion, and "Bruce Maddock Award" in 2000 for contribution to single-screw extrusion technology. He was invited to many professional meetings and universities in the USA, Korea, Japan, Germany, and China. In particular, he was an invited instructor to China by the Chinese Ministry of Education in 1982 to teach polymer engineering to about 70 professors and senior engineers from many provinces of China.
