About the Network
The faculty and staff within the manufacturing network work directly with students; proving and analyzing concepts through prototyping
The manufacturing network supports project requirements of classes within the School of Enginering (SoE). Student project-based classes interacting with the manufacturing network include;
- Design of Mechanical Systems offered through the Multidisciplinary Design Laboratory,
- Advanced Manufacturing Laboratory (AML) I & II,
- Engineering Processes,
- Introduction to Engineering Design (IED),
- Product Design and innovation Studio Classes, and
- Introduction to Rapid Prototyping.
Further, the faculty and staff in the manufacturing network support the development, management and delivery of classes related to manufacturing processes and systems. These classes are offered through Core Engineering and include;
- General Manufacturing,
- AML I & II,
- Engineering Processes, and
- Introduction to Computer Aided Manufacturing.
The larger Rensselaer network
Internal fabrication resources are also found within other Rensselaer resources including;
- IT Operations Machine Shop,
- Physical Facilities Department, and the
- School of Architecture’s wood shop.
Outside the Rensselaer network
The network reaches outside of Rensselaer’s School of Engineering as well. The Manager of Fabrication and Prototyping maintains various contacts with outside fabricators and vendors for processes not available on campus should the need arise for assistance in these areas.
Beyond Student Projects: Additional Collaborations
The network collaborates with other department at Rensselaer and local organizations such as;
- Rensselaer’s Office of Minority Student Affairs,
- SoE Women in Engineering Programs,
- the Society of Manufacturing Engineers,
- local high schools,
- FIRST Robotics Challenge, and others, to promote and support a wide range of programs aimed at K-12 students into exploring engineering and science based educational and career options.
