Center for Automation Technologies and Systems

The Center for Automation Technologies and Systems (CATS) is charged with accelerating the commercial application of technology and fostering economic development in New York through partnerships with companies and federal funding agencies.

The center was designated a New York State Center for Advanced Technology in 1988 and receives annual funding through the New York State Office of Science, Technology and Academic Research (NYSTAR). It is also supported by the federal government and industry partners in New York state and elsewhere.

Current research includes:

  • Microfluidics
    micro-valve packaging, wafer-to-wafer bonding, bio-sensors, micro-pumps, packaging with self-alignment & self-repair
  • Microphotonics
smart pill, fiber terminations & assemblies, laser brazing of fibers & waveguides, hermetic sealing, micro-spot resistance welding
  • Packaging Platform for Sensors
modular packaging platform, micro power harvesting, robotic deployment & networking of unattended sensors
  • Parallel Micro & Nano Assembly
    wafer-to-wafer microassembly, micro-robotics, micro & nano manipulation, self-assembly
