Franklin

Franklin Awarded Travel Grant

W. Randolph Franklin, associate professor of electrical, computer, and systems engineering, is the recipient of the 2006 Jerome Fischbach Faculty Travel Grant. The annual grant, established in 1963 by Jerome Fischbach ’38, provides funds for one member of the Rensselaer faculty to participate in an international meeting as a representative of Rensselaer. Any member of the faculty who has been actively associated with Rensselaer for 20 years or more is eligible for the grant. The recipient is chosen by the Faculty Committee on Honors.

Cramer

Cramer Receives Alan S. Michaels Award

Steven Cramer, professor and acting department head in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, is the recipient of the 2006 Alan S. Michaels Award for the Recovery of Biological Products. Given by the Biochemical Technology Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS), the award recognizes Cramer’s many achievements in chromatographic bioprocessing for the recovery of biological products. Cramer will be attending the September ACS meeting in San Francisco to accept the award and deliver the Alan S. Michaels Award Lecture.

Kane

Early Career Award Goes to Kane

This year’s edition of the coveted Early Career Award was given to Ravi Kane, the Merck Associate Professor in the Isermann Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering. This prize, in recognition of early career achievement, is funded by gifts from Rensselaer faculty and staff. The recipient, chosen by the Faculty Committee on Honors, must have served on the Rensselaer faculty for three years and have up to 10 years of professional experience. The award honors productivity in both teaching and research, with outstanding achievement in one of these areas.

Craig

2006 Outstanding Teacher Announced

The Trustees’ Outstanding Teacher Award for 2006 went to Kevin Craig, Rensselaer professor of mechanical, aerospace, and nuclear engineering. The award, which recognizes outstanding accomplishment in student instruction, is based on student evaluations, peer evaluations, and letters of support from colleagues, alumni, and students, with the final selection made by the president. The Board of Trustees will present the award to Craig in September.

Zimmie

Zimmie Rewarded for Outstanding Service to ASCE

Thomas Zimmie, professor and acting department head in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, was recently awarded the Meritorious Service Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Mohawk-Hudson Section.
The award was given in recognition of Zimmie’s outstanding service to the section for over 30 years, including his 31-year tenure as adviser to the Rensselaer student chapter of ASCE. A typical faculty adviser serves three to five years.
